‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: Guruzeta’s path from rehabilitation to success with the Basque club

“I became very upset,” the attacker says, and then he starts laughing. “I’m sure there’s footage. We went to play United and I performed well. They kept me out of the latter period: I hadn’t yet signed agreement, I was scoring goals, there were lots of rumours, you know how it is. I’m unsure regarding the Magpies’ pursuit, but I recall seeing about Manchester United, standard transfer gossip. I’m not certain how true it was, but had they contacted me, my desire was to remain at Athletic. I’m fortunate to be here.”

At the facility, Bilbao, the early training is set to begin; post-session, the quick travel to the airport and another flight to England, this time to take on the Magpies in the UCL on Wednesday. Just saying those two words brings a smile to his face. This is proving a tough year for the club, due in part to the requirements of being here. Losing in stoppage time in the derby on Saturday, they have won only one of their recent league fixtures and fallen to the Gunners and Borussia Dortmund in European competition. But, take in the big picture, the big nights he has lived and upcoming events, and a sense of thankful reflection from him.
In the three years since he had come back to Athletic, the striker has been a final four contender in Europe, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by the English giants, and has boarded a decades-old barge up the Nervión estuary accompanied by countless supporters after lifting the trophy, the team’s initial silverware in 40 years. He’s now Athletic’s top scorer in the Champions League, where they are countercultural and debuting in a long period. “This was beyond my dreams,” he admits.
The player believed it difficult enough just to earn a spot and his assessment was correct. Born to the former Real Sociedad player his father and a regular attendee at the opposition side, Gorka is a product of Antiguoko, the local academy that produced Mikel Arteta, Xabi Alonso and the tactician. He signed for Athletic at seventeen but after his first-team bow in August 2018, he went through a torn cruciate, the cut, a relegation and a recall before he could truly get a chance, returning at 26 to live the best days of his career.
“You go into the academy doubting you’ll make the senior squad but every phase you go through you’re remaining and you can notice the proximity. You make it and … you have to leave.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in six games between his debut and that period. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games at that level and I suffered the ACL injury.
“A severe disappointment but In retrospect as something positive because it shifted the way I saw things. The rehabilitation process is hard, but it aids growth. You adopt practices previously lacking. Previously I was casual, but I did the sessions and then return home, typical youth behavior. In the facility, all resources are available, so take full advantage. Training, prehab. Get in the gym. If your hips aren’t balanced, work on that. If your ankles are a 10, enhance it further. Every small aspect: do them.
“In the first team you’re going to crash into players who have been in battles repeatedly. They’re so strong. Reviewing old images: my physique was slight. Thus incidents occur. Current photos and the change is dramatic. Recovery revealed that. Practice concludes, but additional work remains. Everyone else is ready, really ready; no exceptions.”
Minutes are crucial. He left emotionally in that year, at 23 years old, joining the second tier. With Sabadell in 2020-21, he scored three times in numerous matches. At Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the scoring picked up. “Many experience this: temporary moves, ended deals. With a turnaround, work, believe, and should the time come the requirement appears in your position, they might come back for you. Readiness is vital. Upon the recall, it was a dream come true. Lifting the cup, play in Europe, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”
No wonder he says appreciate the experience. Especially after last year which, at times, was involved suffering. From top scorer with sixteen goals, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
