Anthony Barry Shares The Vision: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.
A decade ago, Anthony Barry featured for Accrington Stanley. Now, he's dedicated to assist the England manager secure World Cup glory in 2026. His journey from athlete to trainer began with a voluntary role with the youth team. Barry reflects, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He realized his purpose.
Metoric Climb
The coach's journey is incredible. Beginning in a senior role at Wigan, he built a name for innovative drills and excellent people skills. His stints with teams included Chelsea and Bayern Munich, while also serving in coaching jobs abroad across multiple countries. His players include big names such as world-class talents. Currently, in the England setup, it's all-consuming, the “pinnacle” according to him.
“All begins with a vision … However, I hold that obsession can move mountains. You dream big then you break it down: ‘How can we achieve it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ We aim for World Cup victory. However, vision doesn't suffice. We must create a methodical process that allows us to maximize our opportunities.”
Focus on Minutiae
Dedication, focusing on tiny aspects, is central to his philosophy. Working every hour day and night, they both test boundaries. Their strategies feature psychological profiling, a plan for hot conditions ahead of the tournament in North America, and building a true team. The coach highlights the national team spirit and rejects terms including "pause".
“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a rest,” Barry says. “We had to build something that the players want to be part of and, secondly, they feel so stretched that it’s a breather.”
Driven Leaders
He characterizes himself along with the manager as highly ambitious. “Our goal is to master each element of play,” Barry affirms. “We want to conquer the entire field and we dedicate many of our days on. We must to not only anticipate of the trends but to beat them and set new standards. It’s a constant process with a mindset of solving issues. And to simplify complexity.
“We have 50 days with the players prior to the World Cup. We must implement a complex game for a tactical edge and explain it thoroughly during that time. We need to progress from idea to information to understanding to action.
“To build a methodology enabling productivity during the limited time, we have to use all the time available after our appointment. During periods without the team, we have to build relationships with them. We must dedicate moments communicating regularly, we need to watch them play, sense their presence. If we limit ourselves to that time, we have no chance.”
World Cup Qualifiers
Barry is preparing on the last two in the qualifying campaign – facing Serbia at home and in Albania. The team has secured their place at the finals by winning all six games without conceding a goal. But there will be no easing off; quite the opposite. This is the time to strengthen the squad's character, for further momentum.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the football philosophy ought to embody everything that is good of English football,” Barry says. “The fitness, the versatility, the physicality, the integrity. The Three Lions kit should be harder than ever to get but comfortable to have on. It ought to be like a superhero's cape and not body armour.
“For it to feel easy, we have to give them an approach that enables them to play freely like they do every week, that connects with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They must be stuck less in thinking and focus more on action.
“You can gain psychological edges for managers in attack and defense – playing out from the back, attacking high up. Yet, in the central zone in that part of the ground, we believe play has stagnated, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared these days. They know how to set up – structured defenses. We are focusing to speed up play through midfield.”
Thirst for Improvement
His desire to get better is all-consuming. While training for the Uefa pro licence, he was worried about the presentation, especially as his class featured big names including former players. To enhance his abilities, he went into difficult settings available to him to practise giving them. One was HMP Walton in his home city of Liverpool, where he also took inmates in a football drill.
He completed the course in 2020 at the top of the class, and his dissertation – about dead-ball situations, for which he analysed thousands of throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard included impressed and he brought Barry to his team at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it said plenty that Chelsea removed most of his staff but not Barry.
His replacement at Chelsea took over, and shortly after, they secured European glory. After Tuchel's exit, Barry remained under Graham Potter. However, when Tuchel returned with Bayern, he brought Barry over of Chelsea to rejoin him. The FA see them as a double act similar to Southgate and Holland.
