A minimum of 64 people were killed in a security raid against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's past.

Four security agents lost their lives during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, government representatives reported. In excess of 80 people were taken into custody.

Intense confrontations broke out when about 2,500 police forces moved in on Tuesday early hours. The criminal organization responded with gunfire, setting fire to barriers and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives stated.

The International human rights organization said it was "horrified" by the police operation, urging "prompt and effective investigations".

Mission Consequences

The area of favelas near Rio's airport is considered to be the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.

Local authorities stated at least 50 of the fatalities were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Numerous individuals were hurt, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Community Response

Residents have compared the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.

The Red Command group has been increasing their influence in the area, expanding narcotics distribution networks and control of the hillside favelas.

Rio's police stated more than 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were confiscated in the raid, together with multiple guns.
