Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and no fewer than 15 people got wounded in an apparently premeditated gas explosion at a rural property in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The explosion was triggered as officers and emergency crews entered the property near Verona to execute an removal notice for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female got detained at the scene and one more individual who fled subsequent to the incident was located not long after. The trio have been admitted to hospital.

The detonation could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the location displayed the building reduced to a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that attempts had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The president of the Veneto area, President Zaia, said the farmhouse was facing an eviction order due to financial obligations incurred by the three owners.

Negotiators had been assigned to speak to the siblings who had locked themselves into the house. When the officers reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the residents set off the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief the police commander stated to news outlets.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the explosion directly hit our members,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also located at the residence, the interior minister said.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the explosion included eleven more officers of the military police as well as three officers of the state police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

He thought the explosion had occurred on a level above the entrance and informed journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the blast, he revealed members had “detected a whistling noise, probably the propane tanks being opened”.

Community Reaction

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors informed reporters, adding that the three had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto joined other government officials in commemorating the three men who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
