New York City Mayor Eric Adams Will Support Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race
New York City Mayor Eric Adams revealed his plan to support former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, even after months of public tension between the two Democratic figures.
A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations
Only weeks ago, the mayor had strongly criticized Cuomo, labeling him a “snake and a untruthful person” and alleging of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” However, in a new statement, Adams changed his position, stating he now plans to campaign alongside the former governor in communities where he maintains strong support.
“I think that it is imperative to energize the communities of color that have suffered from gentrification on how important this race is,” Adams remarked.
The mayor further explained, “Residents have seen their housing costs rise in terms of gentrification and they have been overlooked in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with community leaders and groups and I will appear with the former governor in those areas and get them involved.”
Race Dynamics and Current Developments
The election battle has so far been shaped by the contest between the former governor and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose increasing popularity has drawn interest globally and represented hopes for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democratic party.
In a latest candidate forum, both Mamdani and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa declared they would refuse Adams’s endorsement if offered.
Earlier this year, Adams had begun his re-election campaign as an independent after facing legal accusations which were later thrown out in exchange for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across the city.
At an unrelated press conference on the same day, Adams answered reporters asking about the support announcement by saying, “Andrew and I will appear together this evening.”
The announcement followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ first game at Madison Square Garden, which took place right after a heated mayoral debate.
