The Hamilton Island Resort, a Iconic Tropical Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Sold by US Investment Giant.
An iconic tropical holiday destination located within the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American investment group for a sum said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to build on the vision and dedication that the Oatley family has built in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
The Reported Sale
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to standard approvals from regulators.
The family issued a comment saying they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton covers over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the area is built upon, featuring a substantial range of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, supporting a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and vintner, first bought the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
The island's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from inland areas and southern states.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm also owns luxury hotels and resorts in multiple nations, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
