The Red Devils Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for United
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, has been a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a major coup for the WSL side.
Her exit from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a major boost to United’s attacking options. She has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Steam at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when United appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the American league, added: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
